Context

A software publisher commissioned localisation testing for the Italian version of a desktop text editor application being ported from Windows to Mac. The aim was to have both the software and its supporting documentation ready for release in the Italian market.

The Italian version was localised from German. Testing covered the graphical user interface, menus, dialog boxes, error messages, keyboard shortcuts, and accelerators, as well as supporting materials such as help files, tutorials, and user documentation. The Italian build was verified on macOS with Italian locale settings to ensure that interface elements, shortcuts, and documentation aligned with platform conventions.

Challenge

Keyboard shortcuts and accelerators differ between Windows and Mac, which can introduce duplicate assignments or inconsistencies. All shortcuts needed to work correctly in the Mac environment, and the documentation had to reflect the adapted commands.

Localisation testing also required validating both the linguistic accuracy of the Italian interface and the functional behaviour of the localised build.

Approach & outcome

Testing was carried out in a Mac environment with Italian locale settings to evaluate how the localised version performed. Menus, dialog boxes, error messages, and interface elements were reviewed to confirm that translations were correct, consistent, and free from truncation or layout issues. Preliminary checks in Passolo helped identify potential accelerator conflicts before in-context testing.

The software’s functionality was also tested to verify that commands and interface components behaved as expected. This included checking that menu options triggered the correct actions, verifying that keyboard shortcuts and accelerators were correctly adapted to Mac conventions, and ensuring that documentation reflected these adaptations.

This process ensured that the Italian localisation of both the software and supporting materials was fully functional on Mac and ready for release.
